Acne in Kenya is caused by a combination of factors that include increased sebum (oil) production by the oil glands in the skin, clogging of the skin pore by dead skin cells, multiplication of the bacteria Propionibacterium acne in the plugged pore and the resultant inflammation. Genes also have a role to play since a person is more likely to develop acne vulgaris if their parents had it.
This interplay of factors leads to the symptoms of acne that are commonly seen in Kenya. These include white heads (closed comedones), black heads (open comedones), pimples (papules), small swellings on the face with pus (pustules) and large facial swellings filled with pus (nodules and cysts).
These acne lesions usually develop on the face though back acne is another common presentation of acne in Kenya. Other areas of the body with a high concentration of oil glands that are affected by acne include the shoulders and upper chest.
In Kenya, acne usually begins at puberty as both boys and girls begin producing increasing amounts of androgens (male sex hormones) which enlarge the oil glands and increase their oil production.
However, this skin condition also affects persons of other ages. For example adult acne affects Kenyan women in their 20s, 30s and even 40s while neonatal acne affects new born babies.
Using DIY acne remedies is another way of treating acne in Kenya. These acne cures are usually made of food items like green tea and apple cider vinegar as well as essential oils.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) treats acne effectively because it contains acetic acid, citric acid, lactic acid and succinic acid which have all been shown by this study and this study to kill the acne-causing bacteria P. acnes. In addition to its antibacterial properties, ACV also has antifungal properties which aid in killing micro-organisms on the skin.
